About

I work full-time as a Senior Technical Advisor – Hydrology for the Environment Agency, England’s environmental regulator. I am part of the Flood Hydrology Improvements Programme. My role sees me working with academics and industry partners to bring new science and innovation into everyday use. This allows us to make better decisions when planning for flooding.

I am the Senior User on the following projects:

I joined the Environment Agency in 2021 after 12 years at the University of Hull, my last role being a Research Fellow in Flood Resilience, part of the Energy and Environment Institute. I am full-time and work compressed hours Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday, with Wednesday’s free to follow my passions.

I am a Visiting Fellow for York St John University. I work with students and staff providing support to the Department of Geography across my areas of expertise. I am a ‘casual lecturer’ and am currently developing the 3rd-year module River Management and will teach it in Semester 1 2025-26.

Science Communication has been a major passion of mine every since I first volunteered for the Hull Science Festival in 2014. Since then, I made it an integral part of my research and scientific identity and have a growing international reputation, particularly for game-based approaches and my work with Games for Geoscience.

I have been self-diagnosed as ADHD (inattentive-type) since 2022 and still learning what this means for me. Honestly, it has been really hard to come to terms with how my career has been shaped by how my brain works, and what it doesn’t allow me to do. I am keen to help others like me and become an advocate for ADHDers and support in science.

I currently live in York with my wife, Amy. Amy is an Associate Professor in Co-production of Research for Mental Health at York St John and has a background in theatre and performance research. We have three cats, two super-seniors (one big and one small) and a kitten. I like to play city-builder computer games and Warhammer – I have a growing pile of shame that is over thirty years in the making. I am emotionally-tied to Tottenham Hotspur.
